June Update

- Matthew stayed in the church nursery without crying for the first time!  Cousin Helen was with him.  6/2/13

- Matthew cried again at church (Helen was not there).  6/11/13

- Grace started ballet classes this month after school once a week.  She's already galloping around the house with her hands on her hips like a little ballerina.  Better than that, I witnesses both Jeff and his dad (Awpaw) following Grace with the same gallop!

- Matthew took a lickin' but kept on tickin' today after several "incidents" at Hermann Park.  First he fell face first into a creek at the Japanese garden (while I was photographing another kid).   Then he had the wind knocked out of him when he walked in front of a bigger kid (our friend) on the swings!   I got a full dose of being a boy's mama & was exhausted by lunch time!

- Grace apparently took control of the microphone in her music class at school when asked if anyone wanted to sing into it.  She belted out Twinkle and a numbers song on the second round.

- Matthew isn't speaking in sentences yet, but he's definitely learning lots of words and communicating verbally more.  One of my favorite things he's started saying lately is "Sing!" right before I put him to bed.  Then he'll add "Bye-bye baby!" which means rock-a-bye baby.  He also likes the rock-a-bye baby version where instead of the cradle plummeting to the ground, Daddy or Mommy catches it.  Whenever I sing Daddy, he pops up off my chest and says "Mommy" (wanting me to sing the Mommy version next) and vice versa.

- Grace wanted me to change the batteries in one of her toys at an inopportune time, so I gave her a screwdriver and told her to give it a try herself.  She successfully unscrewed the battery cover and removed the batteries.  I helped her get the batteries in the right direction and then she closed up with the screw driver again.  Talk about becoming independent!  I'm so proud of my aspiring little "Tool head"!  (My parents' old neighbor used to affectionately refer to my mom as "Tool head" since she remodeled a large part of their house herself.)

- Matthew has twice this week told me that it was time for "nigh[t] nigh[t]" (naptime).  Once was the day after his several accidents at the park and the second was after he fell and hit his head pretty hard at home.  I think he realizes that sleep is the best cure for exhausting accidents!

- Grace followed Matthew's lead on morning naps after she scrapped her knee.  She was pretty upset and said she was tired before lunch, so I suggested she go to her room and rest.  She was sound asleep when I went to get her for lunch.  At lunch she told me how taking a nap made her boo boo all better!

- Matthew bit Grace for the first time because she took something away from him.  Apparently he's learned her technique for defense!  He also repeated this technique on Grace a few days later and then on Mommy when I was on the phone and he wanted my attention.  I guess his second birthday isn't so far away (October...yikes)!

- Grace pushed her cousin Helen under water in the baby pool in order to get her hair wet.  She got time-out for this offense.  Thankfully she hasn't tried it again.

- I took both kids to a friend's pool for the first time this summer and was surprised at how Matthew was willing to jump into the water where no one was located!  Needless to say, I quickly got a flotation devise for the next pool visit.  He is truly a water baby!  Both kids are taking swim lessons once a week.  Matthew's favorite activity is the slide into the water.  I think Grace's favorite activity is eating the lollypop after class!

- I happened to catch Grace teaching Matthew new vocabulary words yesterday.  Here are a few clips from the “Can you say…” lesson that were too cute and funny not to share.

- Here are a few "Gracisms" that I wanted to remember:
    basketti = spaghetti
    sclose = close
    mazagine
    pig-a-lette (Like the addition of the middle syllable)
    choc-a-late (pronounced with 3 syllables instead of 2 like most English speakers)

- We've been trying to reach Grace that it's not nice to interrupt people (especially adults) when they are in a conversation in person or on the phone.  Recently she said, "Excuse me Mama Lisa!" when my mom interrupted a store that Grace was actually telling.  My Mom apologized and let Grace continue her story.

- Grace is officially entering the "Why?" phase.  I swear I hear her ask why about 100 times a day now!

- On Day 5 of Mother's Day Out, Matthew willingly went into the arms of one of his teachers without having a complete melt down.  He only cried for a few minutes and then went about his day happy, active and chatty, even eating most of his lunch!

- Grace asked if she could go to Disney World because she has never seen Mickey Mouse!  (One of her classmates has already been to Disney...hello peer pressure!)

- We've been watching our neighbors down the street tear down and rebuild their house for the past year or so.  Today Grace asked if we could tear down our house and build a bigger one!  Jeff followed that question with, "Do you want to go to college?"  Actually, it would be cheaper to build a new house than to send her to college!
