- Matthew fell out of his bed and hit his head on the toy shelf for the first time. Another night he fell out and it was so dark in his room, I stepped on his leg (thankfully not too hard).
- Mom: "Look! There's a back-hoe loader."
Grace: "That's my favorite truck!"
- One day I was driving and telling Grace how mommies have eyes in the back of their heads. Next thing you know, that evening as I'm trying to read a book before bedtime, Grace is inspecting my head, looking under my hair to see where those eyes are! We were both laughing hysterically as she was doing it.
- Me: "Matthew, who did you play with today?"
Matthew: "Probably myself."
Matthew: "Probably myself."
- G: "It takes a long time to get to Galveston and Nash-a-ville!"
Me: "Yes, it takes longer to get to Nashville."
G: "Yes, because our car doesn't fly!"
- Both kids woke with dry diapers this week (G insisted on wearing undies). Guess we'll let them both start wearing undies at night!
(Note: This only lasted 2 weeks after I washed 4 sets of bed sheets in 3 days.)
(Note 2: Be sure to buy mattress covers that are not only waterproof on top, but also the sides. Both kids managed to soil their beds on the edge, seeping into the sides of their mattresses!)

- At dinner one night, Grace was eating a sloppy joe and tried to look at Daddy's phone he was holding.
Jeff: "Be careful, you're going to get my shirt dirty. Then I'll be called Sloppy Jeff."
G: laughed
J: "Daddy has a lot if those [type of jokes]."
G: "What, sloppy jokes?"
- G: "If you and daddy both die, what will happen to Matthew and me?"
Whoa...who knew this question would pop up so early? Grace's grandmother died a year and a half ago and a sweet neighbor down the street died in January (in her mid 50s with 2 kids still at home, one in college). We've been very open about death with the kids since it is a part of life and this world, but it comes with a lot of questions. I am frequently asked, "Mommy, why did Dorothy die?" And then when a friend is sick I'm often asked, "Are they going to die? Do they have cancer?"

- Me: "I love you more than this gorgeous day."
Matthew: "I love you more than cookies, chocolate and candy!"
Jeff: "What do you love me more than?"
Matthew: "French fries, bagels and [French] toast with syrup."
- Matthew: "Look, a blow-leafer!"
- Matthew: "Mommy, do you like excavators?"
Me: "Yes"
Matthew: "I like excavators. They're my favorite!"
