Matthew's 2nd Birthday

Matthew's 2nd birthday celebration was very laid back, but lots of fun.  Since Mommy wasn't very prepared, I made cupcake brownies instead of cupcakes with frosting (the local store had no bitter chocolate and I didn't have time or energy after a morning trip to the zoo on Friday to make another trip), so after discussing with my cooking advisors (mom & sister), we agreed that cocoa brownies were a great alternative...and judging from the lack of left-overs I think it was the right decision!

The Saturday celebration included G-Rex, Mama Lisa, Aunt Maggie, Uncle Bruce and cousins Helen and Mose as well as our little family.  (Awpa was in Dallas building a deck with his twin brother for their sister.)  We had hoped to play out side, but with 100% humidity and mist we opted to play inside.  The whole party was untraditional and started with opening presents, playing a while and then birthday brownies.

Matthew loved each gift that was opened and probably could have played with each for 30 minutes if his sister had not insisted on opening the next gift.  The grand prize of gifts went to the little acoustic guitar.  He could hardly contain himself when opening the box (Grace could hardly contain herself either).  As soon as it was free of the wrapping, he got it in position and immediately started strumming and bobbing his head.  All of that air-guitar practice paid off!

The only draw-backs to the guitar are:
1) Grace wants to play with it too (source of arguments)
2) He can't sleep with it
3) He can't take it in the car

When we headed out to dinner later that night, Jeff told Matthew that the guitar had to stay at home and after protesting, he finally said, "Bye-bye 'tar!  I love you!" and blew it a kiss!  I wish it were this easy to find the perfect gift for everyone else in my family!

On Matthew's actual birthday (Sunday), we continued the celebration at church followed by lunch at Matthew's choice of restaurants.  The highlight of the day was when at the end of the church service the priest making announcements asked if there were any more announcements.  Grace walked up with Matthew in tow and said that it was his birthday.  Well, after sharing that, the band played happy birthday while Matthew and Grace stood on stage and the congregation sang.  Matthew has also enjoyed singing happy birthday to himself throughout the weekend while jamming on his guitar.  All in all, it was a great celebration!
